Initial estimates of this surface forcing are obtained using multiple nests of the MM5. This model was selected because of the addition of physics specifically suited to the arctic environment (see PMG). The model is run once each day in a forecast mode using initialization data from the 00 UTC cycle of the global AVN model. Currently, a three nest structure is used with a fourth inner nest established for use in special cases.
